In and out of the family: Imagination and the paradoxes of split subjectivity in Russian therapeutic spirituality

Abstract This talk presents an analysis of spiritual and therapeutic practices that focus on family relationships and “kin scenarios” through the lens of the theory of mind and imagination techniques. It begins by highlighting a key aspect of psychotherapeutic culture: the idea that subjectivity is deeply rooted in family history. In certain therapeutic traditions, the self is seen as a polyphony of voices or as a dramatic interaction of different family roles within the individual. Managing these roles or voices during therapeutic process involves cultivating cognitive techniques of memory work and imagination. The talk introduces empirical data about esoteric and Catholic, as well as secular therapeutic practices in post-Soviet Russia dealing with family pattern analysis. It advances a general argument about the importance of closely examining imagination techniques in both religious cultures and psychotherapeutic contexts, and questioning the commonality in their epistemological views on the nature and function of imagination.   La discussion sera assurée par Julia Lerner (Ben Gurion University) et Sergei Shtyrkov (EPHE, GSRL).   Lieu : Bâtiment de recherche nord, salle 5.001, Campus Condorcet 14 cours des Humanités, 93322 Aubervilliers (Métro Front Populaire (Ligne 12) ; RER B La Plaine – Stade de France)   Il sera également possible de participer en ligne via le lien : https://meet.goto.com/794913357   Nous espérons vous retrouver nombreux,   Les organisatrices, Jeanne Kormina (kormina.jeanne@gmail.com) Detelina Tocheva (tocheva.detelina@gmail.com) Virginie Vaté (Virginie.VATE-KLEIN@cnrs.fr)
