André Laliberté teaches undergraduate courses in comparative politics, Asia and identity issues and has been conducting graduate seminars on these topics since 2000. He received his PhD in political science from the University of British Columbia for a thesis on the political behaviour of Buddhist associations in Taiwan, where he stayed for four years. Over the years, he has also conducted field surveys in China and directed many students interested in religious and political issues in that country. He was a visiting scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center to work on the relationship between state and religion in China, and at the University of Leipzig where he joined a team working on secularism “outside the West and before modernity”. He has also directed graduate students for work that has focused on a variety of topics including country responses with a Muslim majority to persecution against Uighurs, secularism in Japan, Hindu movements in India, and the image of the religious in textbooks in Taiwan.
