Zora KOSTADINOVA

sur le thème :

Becoming a Good Person: Islam, the Self and the Ethical Imagination among Naqshbandi Muslims in Sarajevo

The talk will give a brief historical context of the Naqshbandi Tariqa in Bosnia, and share some of the main research findings of the PhD thesis in preparation, with a focus on the ethnographic study of adabAdab (noble conduct), a polysemous Islamic term, has been crucial in capturing certain eras of cultural, social and political imaginers in the history of Muslim societies — though in the anthropology of Islam in Bosnia and the wider Balkans, it remains historically and ethnographically unexplored. The talk will consider how an ethnographic focus on adab can help us understand the Sufi spirituality as a form of everyday sociality on one hand, and as a form of religious virtue and piety on the other. Approaching adab as a formative part of Muslim personhood and therefore as an everyday social practice, is generative of new forms of postwar socialites.
