Doctorante invitée à l’Université Paris Cité, rattachée à l’Université du Zhejiang, sous la direction de M. WU Zhengqiang (Université du Zhejiang) et de M. PAN Junliang (Université Paris Cité – IFRAE), Mme PENG Jiacheng 彭佳成 y présentera une communication intitulée :

Judicial Archives and the Modern Transformation of Clan Organization: The Guo Clan of Chepankeng, Longquan

Ses travaux portent principalement sur l’histoire sociale des lignages ainsi que sur l’étude des archives locales.

Résumé

« Since the mid-Ming dynasty, changes in sacrificial rituals led to the transformation of clan organizations in local society, and genealogies gradually became tools for constructing ancestral representations and forging collective identities, with their texts demonstrating clear constructive and homogenizing tendencies. In the Republican period, the political and cultural status of clans underwent further shifts. Existing studies generally suggest that modern clans declined as state power expanded, but this narrative fails to fully explain their actual functioning in local society. Taking the Guo clan of Chepankeng in Longquan, Zhejiang, as a case, this study examines judicial records and genealogies to analyze discrepancies between clan practice and genealogical records. It finds that the “yifushi”(dependent) clan, structured around alliances with local elites, could still retain its traditional developmental trajectory to some extent in the early Republican period. However, with internal differentiation, the outflow of local elites, and the strengthening of state control, the impetus for reintegration gradually dissipated; clans were subsequently transformed from organizations that integrated economic, political, and cultural functions into cultural symbols primarily serving symbolic and mnemonic roles. »
