Homosexuality and Contemporary Christianity

Interdisciplinary and Multiconfessional Approaches

Strasbourg, 5th July 2018

  The aim of this conference is to study to the interaction between homosexual identity and contemporary Christianity, namely socio-theological approaches of Churches on issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Thus, the conference will include an interdisciplinary and multiconfessionnal approach of Christian theology towards homosexuality. Taking into account the internal diversity of Christian Churches, but also the socio-political environment of LGBTI community in Eastern Europe countries where the Orthodox Christianity is dominant, a particular attention will be paid to Orthodox theology. More over, the topic of same-sex marriage will be addressed with an ecumenical approach of different Christian traditions. The contribution of Churches in promoting tolerance and non-discrimination towards LGBTI will be also highlighted. This first institutional and scientific initiative of the Council of Europe will develop new projects and partnerships for further work on interfaith dialogue and sexual minorities in the near future. The conference is organized by the Council of Europe (SOGI unit), in collaboration with the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, University of Thessaloniki, the Groupe Sociétés, Religions, Laïcités (CNRS-GSRL) of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes PSL (Paris-Sorbonne) and the Faculties of Catholic Theology and Protestant Teology from the University of Strasbourg.
